Mahatma Gandhi’s Great-Grandson Detained While Commemorating Quit India Day

New Delhi, August 9, 2023: Tushar Gandhi, the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, was reportedly detained by Mumbai Police on Wednesday as he attempted to leave his residence to mark Quit India Day.
According to Tushar Gandhi, he was detained at the Santa Cruz Police Station in Mumbai. He expressed his pride in the fact that, like his great-grandparents, Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi, he was also detained on the historic date of August 9 to commemorate Quit India Day.
Tushar Gandhi took to Twitter to share his experience, stating, “For the first time in the history of Independent India, I have been detained at Santa Cruz Police Station as I left home to commemorate 9th August Quit India Day.”
Despite the reported detainment, Tushar Gandhi announced that the planned march to August Kranti Maidan, where the Quit India Movement had commenced, would proceed as soon as he was permitted to leave the police station. Responding to inquiries from Twitter users, he explained that the silent march was perceived as a potential threat to law and order.
He further tweeted, “As soon as I am permitted to leave the police station, I will proceed to August Kranti Maidan. Will definitely commemorate August Kranti Din and its martyrs.”
Quit India Day is an annual observance on August 9 that marks the beginning of the Quit India Movement. On this day, the Indian National Congress passed a resolution demanding the departure of the British colonial rulers from India. Tushar Gandhi, an author and activist, is the son of Arun Manilal Gandhi and the great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi.
As of now, the Mumbai Police have not released an official statement regarding the reported detainment of Tushar Gandhi. The incident has drawn attention due to its connection to the historic Quit India Movement and its relevance in the present context.
