New Delhi, Sep 01, 2023: In a recent interview, Director General of Assam Rifles, Lt Gen P C Nair, expressed optimism regarding Manipur’s future, stating that the state is moving towards better times despite sporadic incidents of violence. Nair emphasized that the paramilitary force has maintained an unbiased stance in the conflict, working diligently to restore peace.
Nair addressed allegations of bias and clarified, “We are not (biased) and I want to make that absolutely clear. We have destroyed an equal number of bunkers of both the communities. The weapons we recovered from both sides are also equal.” He stressed the importance of impartiality and the cooperation between soldiers from various communities within the force.
The Assam Rifles have been actively engaged in quelling violence, restoring peace to many of the 212 affected areas within the past four months. Although the situation poses new challenges, such as mobs surrounding forces and women blocking key roads, Nair emphasized that the force is committed to its role in curbing violence.
Nair emphasized the need for dialogue among the local population to bring about lasting peace. He highlighted efforts by security forces, including the Indian Army and Assam Rifles, to engage with civil society organizations, youths, and stakeholders in working towards a resolution.
The ongoing unrest in Manipur, stemming from ethnic tensions, has claimed over 160 lives and left hundreds injured since May 3. While security forces continue to work tirelessly in challenging conditions, Nair acknowledged that resolving the underlying issues ultimately depends on the locals.
Nair concluded, “If I have to put it very frankly, it is not the security forces who can sort out the problem. We are here only to curtail the level of violence. We are here to stop the firings that take place.”
