Greater Noida, 14th February, 2017: Max Multi-Speciality Hospital, Greater Noida, recently conducted a successful Endoscopic Thyroidectomy surgery on a patient with a large thyroid nodule in her neck. Traditionally, thyroid surgery is done by putting an incision in front of the neck to remove the affected thyroid gland. In this procedure, special care is taken to avoid any contact with the nerve which controls one’s voice and glands responsible for maintaining calcium level in the body.

However, with recent advancements in technology, such surgeries are more seamless and safer to execute. The Endoscopic Thyroidectomy is a surgical technique which allows the surgeon to perform thyroid surgery through a small incision behind the ear and in the hairline. This surgery is a boon for people with a thyroid nodule as it is safer and scar is not visible after the procedure.

The patient came to Max Hospital, Greater Noida , with a thyroid nodule in her neck. The size of the nodule was very noticeable. The FNAC test suggested that the nodule was non-cancerous, but ultrasound report showed a 5 cm size nodule in thyroid. With recent increase in sizes and pain, Dr Mudit Agarwal , Senior Consultant and Dr Saurabh Gupta, Consultant Surgical Oncology and Dr Prashant, Chief Anesthetist planned a Hemi-Thyroidectomy surgery. The patient underwent a successful surgery led by the team of experts.  This surgery is regularly conducted at Max Multi-Speciality Hospital, Greater Noida, and is a boon to patients who suffer from thyroid nodule.

Addressing the media at the conference, Dr Mudit Agarwal, Max Multi-Speciality Hospital, Greater Noida, mentioned, “A thyroid nodule is an abnormal growth that forms a lump in the thyroid gland and is usually present with a swelling or a bump in the neck which moves whenever the person eats or drinks. The nodule is a common occurrence in the younger generation, especially females. Although a majority of thyroid nodules are benign (non-cancerous), about 10% of nodules do contain cancer. Therefore, the primary purpose for evaluating a thyroid nodule is to determine whether it is cancerous or not.”

He further added, “This technique of Endoscopic Thyroidectomy was introduced to avoid a visible scar in front of the neck in the process of removing the diseased thyroid lobe. The procedure is meant to perform half or total removal of thyroid gland by a technique with minimal or no scars on the neck. Surprisingly, diagnosis of a thyroid nodule is the most common endocrine problem in the US and India. It is our endeavour to provide our patients with best-in-class healthcare services and techniques to make their recovery period an easy and a comfortable process.”
