New Delhi, 11th July 2023: Microsoft has announced a new round of layoffs affecting employees in the customer service, support, and sales divisions. This is in addition to the layoff announcement issued in January, which resulted in the elimination of 10,000 jobs.
According to the article published by Geekwire, the company is considering restructuring as it begins a new fiscal year.
A Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement, “Organisational and workforce adjustments are a necessary and regular part of managing our business. We will continue to prioritise and invest in strategic growth areas for our future and in support of our customers and partners.”
According to CNBC, Microsoft announced on Monday that it would lay off 276 employees in its home state of Washington. 66 of them are virtual employees.
Meanwhile, salespeople and customer support workers who worked at Microsoft flocked to LinkedIn and other social media networks to announce their layoffs.
Despite these layoffs, Microsoft’s financial position in 2023 remains strong. The company’s stock has increased by 40.74% in the last six months.
This increased trend can be linked to Microsoft’s investment in the generative AI sector. The corporation recognised the promise of artificial intelligence and has reaped the benefits of its strategic initiatives in this field due to its collaboration and backing of OpenAI the company behind the generative AI model ChatGPT.
