Mumbai (India), 16th June 2023: After the trailer for Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Avneet Kaur’s upcoming movie was released on Thursday, bouts of backlash and outrage have hit the makers and the actors alike.
The film, directed by Sai Kabir and produced by Kangana Ranaut, tells the story of two people who are radically opposite, Tiku (played by 21-year-old Avneet), who sees marriage as her way out of a small town to become an actress marries Sheru (Nawazuddin, 49), who has been working as a junior artist in Mumbai for years. After their marriage the comedy of mishaps for this unorthodox pair begins.
However, a section of the Internet is upset with the “problematic” casting of the key characters and finds the romance between Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Avneet Kaur, who is 28 years his junior, “disgusting,” particularly their kissing scene in the trailer.
Halfway through the teaser, a brief scene depicts Nawazuddin Siddiqui kissing Avneet Kaur. The scene stirred a discussion on Reddit after a user shared a screenshot of it and wrote, “It’s so disappointing to see Avneet Kaur, who is just 21, paired opposite someone who is 49.”
Many people commented in that the romance between the lead actors, despite their age difference, is “gross.”
Another Reddit user wrote, “I don’t get the ‘the script demands it, it’s fine’ thing. It’s still weird and we’re allowed to feel icky. Let’s not just promote such age gaps in relationships/marriages (it’s fine if they’re both adults but Avneet is clearly just barely legal here).”
Whereas, many people believe it is fine for Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Avneet Kaur to shoot romantic or intimate sequences if the scenario or screenplay requires it.
Defending the movie, a user wrote, “Isn’t this a movie ridiculing the age gap? Although I find an actual kiss really creepy but isn’t this what the movie is about?”
Tiku Weds Sheru will be available for viewers on Prime Video on June 23rd.
