New Delhi, 20th July 2023: Netflix has announced that beginning July 20, it will implement limits on account and password sharing for its users in India. This change comes as Netflix sees account sharing and password sharing as a possible income loss.

Earlier this year, similar rules were introduced in the United States, and they were later expanded to over 100 countries in May.

Users in India who have shared their Netflix accounts across multiple households will get emails outlining the steps to take regarding account usage. The update emphasises the need of using a single Netflix account within a single household. Users who are not members of the primary household will be prompted to transfer their profile to a new account and subscription.

Netflix explained how the new system will function, saying, “A Netflix account is for use by one household. Everyone living in that household can use Netflix wherever they are — at home, on the go, on holiday — and take advantage of new features like Transfer Profile and Manage Access and Devices.”

A Netflix Household is a group of people that share one Netflix account and reside in the same house. This means they may all watch Netflix on different devices in their home, such as TVs, phones, and tablets, while using the same account.

If someone is not a member of your household, they must have their own Netflix account in order to view episodes and films. Setting up a Netflix Household allows you to restrict who accesses your account. This is accomplished by connecting a television to the internet in the primary location where you view Netflix.

All other devices that use your Netflix account and share the same internet connection as that TV will be added to your Netflix Household immediately.

Until recently, Netflix subscribers in India had a very lax policy that allowed them to utilise a single account across numerous residences.

This practise was useful for groups of friends or family because it allowed them to split the subscription expense. With the implementation of these new limits, such users may find it more difficult to continue sharing accounts, potentially leading to simpler and more personalised account usage in the future.
