New Delhi, August 26, 2023: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has officially proclaimed August 23 as ‘National Space Day’ to commemorate the remarkable success of Chandrayaan-3, which executed a flawless soft landing on the Moon’s south pole. Speaking at the Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) command centre in Bengaluru, PM Modi lauded the dedication and efforts of the ISRO scientists involved in the mission.
During his interaction with the ISRO team, Modi celebrated the achievements of Chandrayaan-3’s heroes and unveiled the names assigned to the landing sites. The point on the Moon where Chandrayaan-3 touched down will be named ‘Shivshakti’ in honor of the significant role played by women scientists in the mission. The site where its predecessor, Chandrayaan-2, made contact will be known as the ‘Tiranga’ point.
In his address, the Prime Minister highlighted the significance of advancements in science and technology, emphasizing that countries leading in these fields are making history. He enthused, “We have our national pride placed on the Moon. This feat is unprecedented! This is today’s India, the BOLD AND BRAVE India!”
Modi commended the ‘Make In India’ initiative, expressing that the success of Chandrayaan-3 showcased India’s indigenous technological capabilities. Despite being virtually present for the landing event due to his visit to South Africa and Greece, Modi congratulated ISRO chairman S Somanath and his team for the historic achievement.
Chandrayaan-3, a successor to Chandrayaan-2, aims to demonstrate a safe and soft landing on the lunar surface, rover roving abilities, and in-situ scientific experiments. While the landing attempt didn’t succeed, the orbiter has continued to provide crucial data. ISRO’s achievement has positioned India among the top four nations to successfully achieve a soft landing on the Moon’s surface and marked the country as the first to reach the unexplored south pole.
The Prime Minister’s announcement of ‘National Space Day’ on August 23 is intended to inspire and engage the younger generation in the field of science, technology, and space exploration, aligning with India’s pursuit of innovation and exploration in the cosmos.
