New Delhi (India), 3rd June 2023: During his official visit to the United States, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address a Joint Meeting of the United States Congress on June 22.

Top congressional lawmakers informed news agency ANI that the Prime Minister will outline his vision for India’s future and talk on global concerns confronting the two countries during his visit.

On June 22, President Joe Biden will receive Prime Minister Modi for an official state visit to the United States, which will include a state supper. This will not be PM Modi’s first appearance before the US Congress. Earlier in 2016, he addressed the United States Congress, making him the sixth Indian prime leader to do so.

In a statement congressional leaders said, “On behalf of the bipartisan leadership of the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate, it is our honour to invite you (Prime Minister Modi) to address a joint meeting of Congress on Thursday, June 22.”

He will become the seventh and first prime minister to address the joint meeting twice with his upcoming address. During his June 2016 visit to the United States, he had addressed the United States Congress.

Prior to PM Modi, five former Indian Prime Ministers addressed a joint session of the United States Congress. Jawaharlal Nehru was India’s first Prime Minister in 1949, followed by Rajiv Gandhi (July 13, 1985), P V Narasimha Rao (May 18, 1994), Atal Bihari Vajpayee (September 14, 2000), Manmohan Singh (July 19, 2005), and PM Modi (2016).

During his 2016 address, the Prime Minister addressed subjects ranging from climate change to terrorism, defence and security cooperation, and India-US trade and economic relations.

Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and South African President Nelson Mandela are among the world leaders who have received this honour twice.
