PRACTICE MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP AT I.T.S DENTAL COLLEGE, GREATER NOIDA
I.T.S Dental College, Hospital & Research Centre, Greater Noida organized the Practice Management session on 21st Feb 2018 to sensitize the clinicians to Ethical practice, Legal complication & patient handling for reaching successful practice.
The Guest speaker for the occasion was Dr Kunal Gupta, Pediatric dentist & Director Seoul Children Dental Care Centre, Gurgaon. Also present on the occasion was Director – Principal ,Prof (Dr)Akshay Bhargava, Dean UG Program, Dr Sachit Anand Arora, all Dental & Medical HOD’s, undergraduate and post graduate students and interns.
Dr Mousami Goswami, Head Dept of Pedodontics welcomed the Guest speaker and said that one of the most required skills to be successful in practice is the management of the patients. She added that we may hone our skills & knowledge in college with our clinical training however, the contribution of soft skills and human relations is a very important aspect that governs our success in practice.
Dr Kumal Gupta spoke about the Self-development and personal skills, Team building & management & Technology and systems. He apprised the gathering that soft skills and hard skills are essential in the practice of dentistry. He said that hard skills deal with technical proficiency, while soft skills relate to a personal values and interpersonal skills that determine a person’s ability to fit in a particular situation. These skills contribute to the success of organisations that deal face-to-face with clients.
He also added that the ability to communicate with patients, listen, be observant and respond to patients’ needs, empathise, understand and carry out consultations in an organised and professional manner are considered as basic requirements of a competent dentist. He told that dental team is composed of individuals with different competencies who play different roles in the successful completion of dental care procedures. Therefore, acceptance and respect of the competence of each member of the team is vital. He advised students to have patience in life to achieve success. He said that focus of the students should be learning new skills in future. He told that to become a successful Practitioner one should be courteous and polite with their patients. He said that it is behavior of doctor with the patients which stand him apart from other doctors.
Prof (Dr)Akshay Bhargava, Director- Principal talked about the ethical practices in dental practice. He spoke on the honesty and transparency in the dental treatment. He told that treatment outcome should always match with the patient’s expectations. The treatment outcome should be ascertained before starting of the treatment and should be informed in detail and in writing to the patient. He also emphasized on taking consent from the patient before starting any treatment procedure. He told that doctor should take written informed consent singed by patient mentioning all the shortcomings of the treatment.
He told that ethical decision-making and critical thinking skills must be nurtured amongst students so that they could deal with conflicting interests. The decision to refer cases to a more adept dentist is an ethical choice that one should make when the situation warrants it. Ethical dilemmas occur when there are moral decisions to be made given different choices. He stressed that as doctor we should not treat just the disease but human being with disease.
Dr Abhishek Nagpal, Associate Professor, Dept of Prosthodontics also spoke about the tips and tricks of successful practice. He shared his experience with the students and apprised them about some secret tips for becoming successful and good practitioner.
The ceremony concluded with Vote of Thanks by Dr Sachit Anand Arora , Dean UG Program who in his address said that “One of the essential qualities of the clinician should be interest in humanity, for the secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient”. He said that , to be a good doctor, you first have to be a good human being: “a good spouse, a good colleague followed with National Anthem.
