New Delhi (India), April 5, 2023: After weeks of protests by private doctors in Rajasthan, the state’s Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot announced on Tuesday that they had reached a consensus over the Right to the Health bill. With this agreement, Rajasthan will now become the first state in India to implement the Right to Health Act.
The bill passed in the state assembly on March 28, guarantees every resident of the state the right to emergency treatment and care “without prepayment” in any “public health institution, health care establishment, and designated health care centers.” However, private doctors had demanded the withdrawal of the bill, citing concerns over its implementation and impact on their practices.
In a statement on Twitter, Gehlot expressed his satisfaction with the agreement and hoped that the doctor-patient relationship would remain unchanged. “I am happy that finally an agreement has been reached between the government and the doctors on the right to health, and Rajasthan has become the first state in the country to implement the right to health,” he said.
The implementation of the Right to Health Act is expected to improve access to healthcare for Rajasthan’s residents, especially in rural areas where healthcare facilities are often lacking. The move is also seen as a significant step towards achieving universal healthcare in India.
