RALLY BY I.T.S DENTAL COLLEGE ON WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY

I.T.S Dental College, Greater Noida organized a massive rally to mark the occasion of ‘ World No Tobacco Day’ on Friday, May 30th   2015. Keeping in view this year’s theme by WHO, “STOP ILLICIT TRADE OF TOBACCO PRODUCTS”, Doctors & students of I.T.S Dental College, took out a massive rally in which nearly 500 students and 100 faculty members take part  , which was accompanied by Nukkad Natak on “Harmful effects of Tobacco & Oral Cancer”.

Main focus of this event was to educate the masses about the ill effect of tobacco, on one’s health and also on the health of other. A Nukkad natak was also performed by the students of I.T.S Dental College, showing the harmful effect of tobacco on the society, specially focusing on the youth which were becoming the largest user of tobacco in the country, and educating them how, tobacco companies mostly select majority population of youth to get maximum profit. Mr. B.K Arora, Secretary and Dr. Puneet Ahuja, Principal, I.T.S Dental College addressed the gathering and appealed to everyone to contribute to the best of their ability to make each day a ‘No Tobacco Day’. In which their added that the concerned authorities should taken measures to control this menace from society and also implement the tobacco laws.

The I.T.S Dental College also took the initiative to spread awareness among the general public and encourage them to quit tobacco use through various programs such as “Talk on Oral Tobacco & Oral Health – Prevention & Cessation”, “Skits”, & “Personal Experiences of Patients who have Quit Tobacco” in the college auditorium for which Dr. L.Swasticharan Chief Medical Officer National tobacco Control Program, has kindly consented to be the Chief Guest. A talk was given by Dr. L.Swasticharan on “Tobacco & Oral Health – Prevention & Cessation” .He said smoking causes chest infection, heart diseases, lungs problem and cancer. A smoker can inhale 15% of tobacco in his body and give 85% to the environment. Further adding to the facts according to a report by WHO, tobacco use is one of the leading preventable causes of mortality. Tobacco smoking will cause the death of nearly six million people globally each year. Unless we act quickly, it will cause the lives of up to eight million people by 2030, of which more than 80% smokers live in low-and middle-income countries, like India which have maximum cases of Oral- Facial Cancer in the past few decades. In the end he concluded that ITS-The Education Group was doing a remarkable job, in providing health services and health education among the rural and urban masses of the society. He also praised the effort made by the teachers and students of I.T.S Dental College for spreading the awareness against tobacco in the society, specially among the young generation of our country.

A skit was also performed by students from 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year BDS, which show how tobacco affect one’s life and how it’s change forever. Taking a further step towards the goal of no tobacco, a “Tobacco Cessation Counseling Booth” was also established in the Department of Public Health Dentistry to educate and motivate the patients to choose a Tobacco Free Life.
