Noida, 29th August, 2022: As the approximately 100-metre-tall Supertech Twin Towers were demolished on Sunday, doctors have advised residents, specifically those suffering from respiratory ailments, to tread cautiously and avoid the vicinity for a few days if possible.
The demolition of nearly 100-meter-tall structures produced an estimated 80,000 tonnes of construction and demolition waste, as well as massive clouds of dust billowing in the air.
According to the doctors, most dust particles are 5 microns or smaller and can linger in the air for a few days in the absence of favourable weather conditions such as high winds and rain.
Massive dust pollution, they say, can cause itching in the eyes, nose, and skin, as well as Coughing, Sneezing, Difficulty breathing, Lung infection, Nasal Congestion, Asthmatic attacks, and Aggravate Cardiac problems.
As per Dr. Jugal Kishore, Head of the Community Medicine department at Safdarjung Hospital, “When the wind speed is low, the dust particles would remain suspended for a long time. People with respiratory disorders, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Asthma, and Bronchitis, should avoid the region if at all possible.”
“They should prevent dealing with the affected region for at least 48 hours. Others in the region should refrain from exercising for a few days “He stated further.
According to Dr. Jugal Kishore, patients with respiratory ailments should take their medications on a regular basis and visit their doctors if their symptoms worsen. “Particulate matter smaller than 2.5 millimetres will be an issue,” stated Dr Yudhyavir Singh, Assistant Professor, Critical Care, AIIMS.
This is likely to exacerbate coughing, sneezing, asthmatic attacks, lung infection, nasal congestion, and difficulties breathing.
Dr Dipankar Saha, former chief of the Central Pollution Control Board’s air lab, advised Noida officials to monitor air pollution levels using low-cost sensors till the debris is cleaned. “To determine the zone of influence, modelling should be performed. People living in and around the area should monitor air quality and only go outside if absolutely necessary.
For a few days, avoid exposure. Water sprinkling at regular intervals will be quite beneficial “He stated.z
