Mumbai (Maharashtra), 15th May 2023: Nashik police authorities have allegedly released a case against the Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut for his Twitter appeal.

Raut, in a Tweet, appealed to the state officials and police personnel not to follow the orders of the ‘illegal’ Maharashtra state government. He made the appeal on May 12, a day after the Supreme Court issued its decision on the Shiv Sena-centered political squabble in Maharashtra.

Raut had earlier also said that democracy and freedom had been badly harmed in Maharashtra and that such “autocracy” must be challenged. According to an official, the Nashik police took cognizance of the remarks on their own initiative and filed a complaint under section 505(1)(B) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Police (Incitement to Disaffection) Act, and other pertinent laws.

portion 505 (1) (b) addresses the “intent to cause, or which is likely to cause, fear or alarm to the public, or to any section of the public, by which any person may be induced to commit an offence against the State or against public tranquillity.”

Raut has responded to the case by claiming the police authorities were forced to do so by coming ‘under pressure from the chief minister and the state home minister.’
