New Delhi, Dec 17, 2022: On Saturday, the Supreme Court dismissed the review petition filed by Bilkis Bano challenging the early release of the 11 men convicted for gang-raping her and murdering her family members in 2002.
All 11 of them had been sentenced to life imprisonment for the crime.
The 11 men who were convicted in 2008 in the case, however, walked out of the Godhra sub-jail on August 15 as Gujarat government ordered their release under its remission policy.
Bilkis Bano was 21 years of age and five-months pregnant when she was gang-raped while fleeing the riots which broke out as a result of the Godhra train burning incident. Her three-year-old daughter was among the seven family members who had been killed.
Following the top court’s decision to dismiss the plea, many have come out in support of Bilkis Bano. Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal said in a tweet, “Where will you go if you don’t get justice even from the Supreme Court?”
