Greater Noida (18 July 2025): Sharda University’s School of Law hosted the 1st Anand Swaroop Gupta Memorial Law Lecture Series, marking a significant academic milestone with the presence of Justice Rajesh Bindal, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, as the Chief Guest. The event, held at the university’s campus in Knowledge Park, Greater Noida, focused on the theme “Fundamental Duties in the Constitution: A Step Towards a Responsible Citizen.”
Justice Rajesh Bindal inaugurated the state-of-the-art Moot Court Hall at the university and addressed a large gathering of law students, faculty members, legal scholars, and dignitaries from academia. In his keynote address, he emphasized the critical role of education in shaping not only competent legal professionals but also responsible citizens who understand and perform their constitutional duties.
Justice Bindal: Legal Education Is More Than Learning the Law
Speaking to the budding legal minds, Justice Bindal noted, Educational institutions are the foundation of learning; the courtroom is where that learning is tested under real pressure. Once you enter the legal profession, the challenges multiply.
He urged students to take their education seriously and to actively engage in activities like moot court, which he called a simulation of courtroom experience-reel life before real life. He was particularly impressed by the infrastructure at Sharda University, noting that the moot court ambiance mirrored the aura of the High Courts and even the Supreme Court.
Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Duty Over Rights. Justice Bindal highlighted the importance of innovative thinking, asserting that only those who think beyond the conventional framework can survive and lead in the competitive legal field. Quoting a small Chinese poem in memory of the late Anand Swaroop Gupta, he said, While most think in terms of years, he envisioned generations. His vision has enabled thousands of students to graduate, and even more to learn.
Touching on constitutional philosophy, he made a powerful analogy, In accountancy, there is a concept called ‘trial balance,’ and just like that, the rights and duties of citizens must be balanced. Unfortunately, while everyone demands their rights, very few are willing to fulfill their duties.
He reminded the audience that the Preamble and Constitution of India are living documents, deserving not only legal reverence but emotional and civic celebration.
Historical and Cultural Reflections
Referencing epics like the Ramayana and the Bhagavad Gita, Justice Bindal pointed out that the concept of duty is deeply rooted in Indian culture. Lord Ram is remembered because he followed his duties. Our scriptures emphasized duty long before the Constitution did.
He also spoke about the 1999 Verma Committee, which recommended adding more fundamental duties to the Constitution, and urged educational institutions to distribute booklets and materials to raise awareness about these duties among the youth.
Justice Bindal also acknowledged initiatives like ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ and ‘Constitution Day’, which aim to instill patriotism and constitutional values among citizens. He praised the 182-meter tall statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Gujarat as a symbol of national unity and a tribute to India’s freedom fighters.
Warning Against Over-Reliance on AI in Law
The Honourable Judge also touched upon the growing presence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education and law, urging caution. AI is transforming many fields, but it can never replace the human element in the judiciary. Legal decisions require ethical, emotional, and social consideration — something only human judgment can provide.
He called for a balanced use of technology and warned against superficial learning among the younger generation, pointing out that “attention deficiency” is a growing concern. Deep knowledge, not surface understanding, is the key to meaningful legal practice.
Students Inspired, Moot Court Declared Open
Justice Bindal took time to answer students’ questions and motivated them to cultivate habits of reading, listening carefully, and engaging in logical analysis. A successful lawyer or judge is one who listens attentively and understands every fact, he said.
The event also marked the official inauguration of Sharda University’s Moot Court Hall, which the judge praised as one of the best he has seen in Indian universities.
Chancellor’s Remarks: Lawyers as Guardians of the Nation
Chancellor Dr. P.K. Gupta delivered an inspiring message to the students, stating, You are not just lawyers in training — you are the future protectors of our nation. He highlighted the historic role of lawyers in India’s freedom struggle, mentioning that while other professions have retirement ages, lawyers serve the nation lifelong. He emphasized the importance of comparative legal studies in preparing students to think globally and adopt multi-dimensional legal perspectives.
Pro Chancellor Dr. Y.K. Gupta, while addressing the inauguration of a Moot Court session at Sharda University, shared heartfelt reflections on its inspiration and the university’s broader vision. He stated that the Moot Court has been initiated in memory of his father, Anand Swaroop, and is a tribute to the values instilled in him by both his parents—his mother, Sharda, being the namesake of the university.
Dr. Y.K. Gupta emphasized the university’s commitment to nurturing students into capable professionals who can contribute meaningfully to the nation’s growth. It is our constant endeavor to ensure that every student studying at Sharda University becomes a better professional in life. We want our students to play a significant role in realizing the Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for India@2047, he said. He credited his elder brother, Mr. P.K. Gupta, for his consistent efforts toward bringing innovation and improvement in the university’s functioning and academic standards.
Sharda University, which holds a prestigious NAAC A+ accreditation, established its School of Law in 2012. Since then, many of its graduates have gone on to practice in the Supreme Court and various High Courts, marking a significant presence in the legal landscape. Dr. Gupta pointed out that as global interest in investing in India grows, there is an increasing demand for highly skilled legal professionals, a demand Sharda University is dedicated to meeting through world-class legal education.
Education is the foundation of development. Today’s students must understand that education policy shapes their future, and that hard work makes nothing impossible, he added.
Dignitaries in Attendance
The event was graced by several senior university officials including, Chancellor Dr. P.K Gupta, Pro-Chancellor Dr. Y.K. Gupta, Vice Chancellor Prof. Sibaram Khara, Pro Vice Chancellor Dr. Parmanand, Dean, School of Law, Dr. Rishikesh Dave, Dean, Research, Dr. Bhuvnesh Kumar.
