New Delhi (India), April 18, 2023: The Supreme Court is set to hear a plea calling for an investigation by an independent commission into the recent murders of a former mafia don and politician, Atiq Ahmed, and his brother, Ashraf Ahmed.
The plea also demands an independent inquiry into multiple encounters carried out by the Uttar Pradesh police. The case will be heard by a top court bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud on April 24th.
The brothers were laid to rest at the Kasari-Masari graveyard in Prayagraj on Sunday, with their close relatives in attendance, including Atiq’s two minor sons and Ashraf’s daughters.
The suspects in the murders, Arun Maurya, Sunny Singh, and Lavlesh Tiwari, were sent to judicial custody for 14 days by a UP court.
The brothers were assassinated in broad daylight by three men disguised as journalists, despite the presence of media personnel and police officers. The Uttar Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, has ordered a high-level investigation into the killings, and a three-member judicial commission has been formed for this purpose.
The postmortem of the brothers’ bodies was conducted on Sunday by a panel of five doctors amid tight security. The burial is expected to take place at the Kasari Masari cemetery later in the day.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the region, and the call for an independent probe into the matter has gained momentum in recent days. The Supreme Court’s hearing on the matter is eagerly awaited by all concerned.
