Social- Entrepreneurship : Now A Super website to help deserving patients get treatment at Delhi Government hospitals under EWS scheme

New Delhi: Many underprivileged patients have benefited from the Supreme Court’s 2011 order which mandates that all private hospitals which received land at lower price from the state government have to treat 10 % Inpatient care (IPD) and 25% Outpatient care (OPD) economically weaker sections for free.

Take a case of four-year-old Shugaun, born with a heart defect. For surgery in a private hospital in Delhi, her family would have had to shell out a few lakh rupee. Her father, a tailor in Faridabad who earns Rs 6000 a month, could only take her to the government hospital – AIIMS – where is always a long waiting period for admittance.

But now Shagun is leading a healthy life with the help of Charitybeds.com, a NGO that helps needy patients to get a bed and ensure treatment in private hospitals. She was treated at Fortis Escorts Hearth Institute in Delhi for free.

There are countless examples like Shagun, who enjoyed free treatment at government hospital under this scheme.

“There are 47 such private hospitals in Delhi which have taken government land at price of Rs 1 an acre and they have more than 700 reserved beds for underprivileged people. After the Supreme Court’s order the matter came to public domain and a website ‘Charitybeds.com’ tirelessly working to ensure the implementation of this order,” said Ashok Agarwal, who filed a petition in the Delhi high court for the implementation of this order.

Charitybeds.com – a website run by the owner of The Oberoi Group update number of vacant seats in the private hospitals under this scheme and also help patients to get their right.

Four hospitals have filed a case against Supreme Court’s ruling which have around 400 beds and denied to give treatment to poor in their hospitals. “The debate in this case is over now and court has reserved its decision which likely to be out in July. I’m definite that court will order in our favour,” said Agrawal.

“If the court gives order in our favour, then we will have around 1,000 bed for poor every day,” he added.
