New Delhi, 05th July 2023: The Supreme Court prolonged Teesta Setalvad’s interim bail until the next hearing on July 19.

The court is considering the activist’s petition against a Gujarat High Court judgement ordering her surrender in a case of suspected evidence falsification to frame innocent people in 2002 post-Godhra riots charges. The Supreme Court denied her request for regular bail.

Previously, on July 1, the Supreme Court safeguarded her from arrest and placed the high court order on hold for the time being.

The three-judge panel hearing the case late Saturday night questioned why the activist was denied time to appeal the high court judgement.

The court also added that considering that a woman brought forward the petition, she is entitled to protection under Section 437 CrPC.

This comes as she was arrested in June last year along with former Gujarat police chief R B Sreekumar and former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt for allegedly fabricating evidence to frame “innocent people” in the post-Godhra riots cases.
