New Delhi (India), 04/08/23: Tomato prices are expected to reach Rs 300 per kg in the coming days, and vegetable costs are also expected to rise, according to wholesale sellers. Tomato prices have been under pressure for more than a month due to supply difficulties caused by excessive rainfall in major producing regions.
Tomato wholesale rates in Azadpur mandi in Delhi, Asia’s largest wholesale fruits and vegetables market, were ruling at Rs 170-220 per kg on Wednesday, depending on quality.
According to PTI, Azadpur Tomato Association President Ashok Kaushik commented on the situation, he said, “In the last three days, the arrival of tomatoes has reduced as the crop has been damaged in the growing regions because of heavy rainfall.”
According to Kaushik, a member of the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC), vegetable wholesalers are losing money since sales of tomato, capsicum, and other seasonal vegetables have plummeted.
He stated that wholesale tomato prices had risen to Rs 220 per kilo from Rs 160 per kilo, implying that retail prices may also rise.
According to wholesale sellers, prices could exceed Rs 300 per kg in the coming days.
With the central government’s assistance in the form of subsidised tomato sales beginning July 14, retail prices in the national capital had begun to soften recently, but have since firmed due to a lack of supply.
According to Anil Malhotra, a member of the Azadpur Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC), both supply and demand for tomatoes are low in the market, and merchants are facing a number of challenges.
According to consumer affairs ministry data, the retail price of tomato reached Rs 203 per kg on Wednesday, while the price at Mother Dairy’s Safal retail shops was at a whopping Rs 259 per kg.
