New Delhi (India), 13th May 2023: TRAI, the telecom regulator, urged telecom operators to take action against the misuse of telemarketing message templates within 30 days in order to reduce annoying messages.
According to the regulator in charge, certain telemarketers are abusing enterprise headers and content templates.
The regulator said on Friday, “Unsolicited Commercial Communication (UCC) is a major source of inconvenience to the public and impinges on the privacy of individuals and TRAI has been taking various steps to curb it. Today, TRAI has issued a direction to stop misuse of message templates under Telecom Commercial Communication Customer Preference Regulations, 2018 (TCCCPR-2018).”
Instead of cell numbers, authorised telemarketing communications include headers that identify the company from which they are originated.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has asked telecom operators to make amendments to the code of practises (CoPs) governing headers and content templates of telemarketing messages in accordance with the TCCCPR 2018 guidelines and comply within 30 days.
According to the regulator, look-alike message titles or headers cause confusion among message recipients and are being exploited for profit by some companies.
TRAI stated that the number of variables in a template is not defined in CoPs, resulting in template misuse, and that promotional content is passed in the variable portions of content templates.
TRAI has requested telecom carriers to build a system within 60 days to deactivate any headers that have been inactive for 30 days.
Telecom operators must set up an online method to revive message headers and guarantee that each header is distinct.
According to Trai’s directive, telecom operators must re-verify all content templates within 60 days and prohibit unverified templates.
