GREATER NOIDA News (26/08/2025): The Indian export sector is closely monitoring and responding to the United States’ recent notification of additional tariffs on Indian goods.

To understand the implications, Ten News Team spoke with Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Chief Mentor of EPCH and a leading voice for the handicrafts and exports sector in India.

Sharing his perspective on the fallout, Dr. Rakesh Kumar noted:

“It’s unfortunate, but the entire handicrafts trade and industry stands firmly with the ‘Nation First’ policy. However, the U.S., being the largest consumer market, will inevitably disrupt India’s handicrafts production ecosystem and its employment generation capacity, as nearly 40% of Indian handicrafts exports are directed towards the U.S. gift and handicrafts segment.”

Highlighting potential alternatives, he added:

“Interestingly, around 30% of those exports are re-routed to Latin America. This means about 12% of Indian handicrafts exports could be directly exported to the region. While challenges such as distance, shipping schedules, and language barriers exist, these can be overcome with the right support. The Central Government should consider establishing warehouses and marketing channels in free trade zones such as Uruguay and Chile. Diversification and tapping into unexplored markets will be crucial for mitigating the impact of the U.S. tariffs.”

Dr. Kumar stressed that the future of India’s handicrafts industry lies in strategic diversification, government-backed infrastructure support, and stronger market linkages beyond the U.S.
