If a victim collapses due to a Sudden Cardiac Arrest – do not wait for the doctor to arrive

A cardiac arrest is a condition when the heart stops working. However, the brain stays alive for up to ten minutes making it possible to revive the victim’s heart through hands only CPR

New Delhi October 3rd, 2016: Imagine a case where a person collapses in front of you due to a sudden cardiac arrest and upon checking you find that his or her heart has stopped beating. What would your immediate reaction be – would you wait for an ambulance to arrive or would you do something to revive them? In such situations, every minute counts and can reduce the chances of a person’s survival by up to 10%.

“If the revival process through chest compressions is started within the first minute of a person’s death, the chances of their revival are almost 90%. When a person collapses in front of you with no evidence of respiratory activity, then you must immediately make them lie down on the floor flat on their back. Post that you should start compressing the centre of their chest with your hands, up to 1-2 inches deep for a minimum of 10 minutes at a speed of 100 compressions per minute until the person starts breathing again. Hands-only CPR is an extremely effective way to save lives of those who suffer sudden cardiac arrest. One must never perform it on a living person”, said Padma Shree Awardee Dr KK Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India and President Elect IMA.

Heart Care Foundation of India jointly with Indian Medical Association will be conducting CPR training camps at the upcoming Perfect Heath Mela being organised from October 25-29, 2016 at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium, New Delhi.

Continuous compression only CPR compresses the heart between the sternum and the backbone and builds up the pressure that keeps the oxygenated blood flowing to the brain and keeps the person alive until a defibrillator becomes available or expert medical help arrives. Therefore, if you see someone collapse from sudden cardiac arrest, acting promptly can save his or her life. The earlier you give CPR to a person in cardiac arrest, the greater the chance of a successful resuscitation. The Mela showcases activities across categories such as health education seminars and check-ups, entertainment programs, lifestyle exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and competitions. In addition to this, the NGO conducts programs and camps to train people on the technique of hands only CPR through its CPR 10 mantra for revival after a sudden cardiac arrest.
