What is ‘sengol’? The coveted installation at the new parliament

New Delhi, 28th May 2023: With the inauguration of the newly-constructed Indian Parliament, a main part of the day’s ceremony was the installation of the ‘sengol’ in the Lok Sabha chambers.

According to government releases, It was given to Indian PM Jawaharlal Nehru at the time of Indian independence from British rule as a mark of power transfer between British government and the Indians. The one accorded the sceptre is expected to be the responsible and just ruler who impartially rules the kingdom.

The sengol was until now installed at Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj and was recently brought and handed over to PM Modi during today’s inaugural ceremony by nearly 30 pontiffs from various adheenams in Tamil Nadu.
