New Delhi, 21st June 2023: WhatsApp and Google have joined hands to fix an issue in Android phones. Multiple users uploaded screenshots of WhatsApp’s privacy dashboard in May of this year, showing WhatsApp accessing the microphone even when the user was asleep.

WhatsApp later confirmed that the inaccurate privacy indicators and notifications were triggered by a fault in the Privacy Dashboard. They reiterated that privacy was not jeopardised as the microphone was not being used in the background.

The claims against WhatsApp gathered traction, particularly following a post from Elon Musk. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, has also stated that the matter will be probed.

WhatsApp, on the other hand, responded immediately, saying that the problem was caused by a fault in the Android system’s Privacy Dashboard. The corporation then enlisted the assistance of Google to investigate and remedy the matter.

Google had also acknowledged that it was a flaw in the Android operating system. For a small number of WhatsApp users, the error resulted in the inaccurate display of privacy indicators.

The bug has been fixed, according to the official Twitter account of Android Developers. They acknowledged the bug’s impact on a small number of WhatsApp users and thanked WhatsApp for their assistance in resolving the issue. The tweet was published early on Wednesday.

Google also apologised for any confusion caused by the error and advised users to update their WhatsApp app to fix the issue.

The tweet read, “A recent Android bug affecting a limited number of WhatsApp users produced erroneous privacy indicators and notifications in the Android Privacy Dashboard.Users can now update their WhatsApp app to address this issue.”

The tweet thanked WhatsAppNd said, “We thank WhatsApp for their partnership and apologise for any confusion this bug may have caused users.”

The patch is now included in the most recent WhatsApp for Android update, ensuring that the app no longer triggers the bug.

Users must update the latest version of WhatsApp for Android from the Google Play Store to remedy the issue with privacy indications.
