Rajasthan, Sept 29th, 2022: In a surprising turn of events, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot on Thursday announced that he will not be contesting the Congress presidential polls.
Furthermore, he has apologized to interim party president Sonia Gandhi for failing to maintain coordination and peace in the party.
“I have apologized to Sonia Gandhi. It is my moral responsibility as the Chief Minister to ensure a coordinated effort and for the first time that hasn’t happened. I have expressed my apology to Sonia Gandhi. I have held different posts in Congress over several years but this is the first time this has happened. This has saddened me. I will not contest elections under these circumstances. Sonia Gandhi will decide whether I stay Chief Minister,” said Gehlot.
Gehlot was referring to Congress MLAs’ rebellion wherein over 90 Rajasthan MLAs resigned in support of him and also because they were not consulted on certain party matters.
“Will not contest in view of the rebel crisis and the recent developments in Rajasthan”, he said.
Gehlot on Thursday met with Sonia Gandhi at her Delhi residence following which he officially announced his decision to back out from the elections and apologized to Gandhi.
Meanwhile, Congress presidential polls have also found another candidate in former CM of Madhya Pradesh and Rajya Sabha member, Digvijaya Singh who has initiated the process to file his nomination.
