Delhi (India), February 13, 2023: India has become one of a select group of countries with lithium reserves with the discovery of 5.9 million metric tons of reserves in the Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir. India is now the second-largest country in the world with lithium reserves, after Chile, with 9.2 million metric tons.

The discovery of lithium reserves is a game-changer for India and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, as it could lead to economic development for the people of the state. “It will take us to self-sufficiency (aatam nirbar bharat), which is the dream of PM Narendra Modi,” said Secretary of Geology and Mining, Amit Sharma.

Known as “white gold,” lithium is a chemical element used in rechargeable batteries for mobile phones, laptops, digital cameras, and electric vehicles. The discovery of lithium reserves could reduce the need for imports and improve employment opportunities.

The Geological Survey of India (GSI) submitted a detailed report about the presence of lithium in Reasi 26 years ago. The discovery of lithium reserves could add to the stature of India while it holds the G-20 presidency.

However, experts have raised concerns that lithium extraction may damage the environment. Sharma said that all precautions and care would be taken during the extraction.
