CII Big Picture Summit 2016 boosts confidence of M & E sector.

The 5th Edition of CII Big Picture Summit 2016 organized at the Le- Meridien, New Delhi on October 25-26 played a pivotal role in boosting the optimism of the media and entertainment sector. Graced by a large gathering of delegates from all over the globe, the core objective of the event was to push the limits of growth. This year’s theme “Embracing disruption to stay competitive” spokes volumes for itself.
The bigwigs comprising the top creative minds and business honchos from the media industry- regulators, policy makers, academia and civil society members embraced the event in good strength, thereby ensuring an overwhelming response for the Summit.

Some of the stalwarts that graced the CII Big Picture Summit 2016 included names like M. Venkaiah Naidu, Ramesh Sippy, Col. Rajyavardhan Rathore, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, Arnab Goswami, Sharmistha Mukherjee, Rahul Kanwal, Shekhar Kapur, Manish Paul, Charu Sharma, Sudhir Mishra, Minister Vijay Goel, Annu Kapoor, Kiran Karnik, Nandita Das, Manoj Tiwari, Manish Tiwari, Ajay Devgn and Anubhav Sinha to name a few.

The distinctive aspect about the Summit being the discussion and brainstorming of the industry leaders on plethora of disruptive ideas and unconventional business models launched by new entrepreneurs that posed colossal challenge to the conventional rules of the business.

The flagship event of CII since its inception for M & E Industry has brought in a welcome change which is ‘Aim big and to think globally’. For realizing the same, a vision has been created synergized with the best minds of the industry have been harmoniously working to resolve issues that thwart and hamper growth. With the government of the day, too resolved for ushering in a change in policy and regulatory framework coupled with initiatives like GST Bill, it eventually augurs well for the growth of this industry.

Over the passage of time, the mega spectacle for the M & E Industry has emerged as an ‘annual meeting hub’ for leaders to deliberate on the way forward for the sector to accelerate growth. As far as key focus areas of the Summit go, they are policy and regulatory corrections.

According to Director General CII, Chandrajit Banerjee, the CII Big Picture Summit in its fifth edition, has proved its worth as a substantial platform for M & E industry stakeholders to deliberate on challenges and innovate ways of overcoming them in order to achieve the growth target of 100 billion dollars for the industry in the next five to seven years. CII has been working assiduously to make this possible through its vision to create growth templates in all M & E verticals and bring the industry together so that they can speak cohesively on all major issues.

The CII is being steered by the brightest of the creative and business minds of the M & E sector, the government, regulator, academia and civil society. A new phase of technology setting a relentless pace of change and start ups driving the change across the world is being witnessed. They are the new frontiers of innovation and disruption. There’s no doubt about the fact that deliberation on this theme can provide useful insights to move forward. It is our conviction that India is all set to emerge as a global media and entertainment hub. The CII Big Picture Summit has received invaluable support from the government and the policy makers who strongly believe that the soft power of India’s M & E sector can play a pivotal role in consolidating the Indian economy. They have been working in sync with the leaders of M & E Industry to understand the pertinent issues, clear bottlenecks and creating a favourable policy environment to help the industry grow from the current 20 billion dollars to 1000 billion dollars. Their role in creating a roadmap for the M & E industry has been significant.

Over the years, Union Ministers have attended the CII Big Picture Summit. The CII awaits a national policy, one that will visualize a clear cut roadmap for higher echelons of growth of Indian M & E.

As regards the leaders of the movement go, top captains of the M & E Industry have been the inspiration and the guiding forces behind the success of the CII Big Picture Summit. Over the period, they have assumed the responsibility of shaping up the future road map of the industry and provide the thought leadership to this movement of change. Their presence at every edition of the Summit boosted the confidence of stakeholders to push for more and raise the benchmark.

The welcome and the theme address were given by Sudhanshu Vats (Chairman, CII National Committee on Media & Entertainment and Group CEO, Viacom 18 Media Pvt. Ltd.). Subsequently Harit Nagpal, CEO Tata Sky addressed the audience ensued by a special address by RS Sharma, Chairman TRAI.

Following this, the chief guest of the event M. Venkaiah Naidu delivered his special address with the concluding remarks being made by Ramesh Sippy, eminent film director.

The event had myriad engaging sessions notable among them being the ‘Brainstorming session with DIPP, TRAI, MIB and the Media and the Entertainment Fraternity’, session on ‘Disruption in Television News’ ensued by ‘The Day the Music Industry Died- Bye Bye Musical Pie’, ‘Indian cinema-Making the journey from volumes to valuation’, ‘An interactive session with Col. Rajyavardhan Rathore’, ‘How entertainment brings happiness in our lives-By Manish Paul’, ‘Sports Broadcasting in India-A Game Changer’ to name a few.
