The Indonesian government on Monday said that the structural damage done to detention centres by the earthquake that hit the country last week has led to multiple mass prison breaks. As many as 1,400 inmates have escaped from prisons. A Ministry of Justice official said the inmates "escaped because they feared they would be affected by the earthquake".
