42-yr-old crushed to death on NH-24

GHAZIABAD: A 42-year-old man was killed after he was allegedly mowed down by a speeding vehicle on NH-24 in Ghaziabad on Sunday. Police have booked the vehicle’s driver, based on a complaint filed by the victim’s 20-year-old son Puneet.

According to Puneet’s complaint, the accident took place at 6.45 am near ABES cut on the stretch of the highway that falls within Vijay Nagar police station limits.

Puneet told police he was waiting with his father, Udaiveer Singh, a resident of Ghaziabad’s Shanti Nagar, near the highway to catch a public transport vehicle to go to Delhi when the accident took place.
“Puneet said a speeding vehicle suddenly veered to their side of the road and ran over Udaiveer, crushing him. Puneet rushed his father to GTB Hospital in Delhi where he was declared dead on arrival. Police have sent the body for post mortem. We’re thoroughly inquiring into Puneet’s claims. He told police the vehicle sped from the spot after causing the accident and that he was unable to identify it or note down its registration number in the confusion that ensued,” said Surender Yadav, SHO, Vijay Nagar police station.
An FIR under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC has been lodged against the unidentified driver at Vijay Nagar police station. Police said eyewitness accounts are being collected to verify if they corroborate with the sequence of events narrated by Puneet, who was unavailable for comment. Police are awaiting the autopsy report, which they say could shed further light on the case.
