THE 9th ARMAAN DOGRA MEMORIAL INTER-SCHOOL FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT 2017

The closing ceremony of the 9th Armaan Dogra Memorial Inter-School Tournament was held at DPS R.K. Puram on 3rd February 2017. Armaan was an exemplary student of the school, who met with an untimely death. His warmth and exuberance is remembered by all his friends. The tournament is held annually in his memory. Fourteen schools participated in the three-day event.

The various dignitaries present included the Chief Guest, Mr Kapil Dev, the former captain of the Indian cricket team; Mr Pramod Grover, Vice Chairman, Managing Committee, DPS RK Puram and Honorary Treasurer, DPS Society; Dr Shaji Prabhakaran, author and former Regional Head, South and Central Asia for FIFA; Sqn Ldr S.S. Hakeem, the only Indian sportsman who is a football Olympian and an International referee; Ms Oinam Bembem Devi, captain of the Indian Football team at the 11th South Asian Games 2010 and the SAFF Women’s Championship 2012; Mrs Meenakshi Pahuja, Associate Professor at Lady Shri Ram College and an All India Inter-University medalist in swimming; Mr Samip Rajguru, Executive Editor – Sports at India TV channel; Dr. M.C Mishra, Director of AIIMS; Mr John Robinson from Asian News, and Armaan’s parents ,Dr and Mrs P.N. Dogra. Also present were the Principal, Ms Vanita Sehgal, and the Vice Principals, Dr Renu Nayar ,Ms Padma Srinivasan and Ms Anita Singh, and Mr.N.Suresh, Head of the Physical Education department with his team of teachers.

The event began with the lighting of the lamp. The Principal, Ms Vanita Sehgal warmly welcomed all the guests and expressed her appreciation for Dr. and Mrs Dogra’s efforts in ensuring that Armaan’s spirit continues to live on. She shared her view that sports  is the one thing that truly unites us. A minute of silence was observed in Armaan’s memory.

Mr. Kapil Dev, in his address to the students, said that he was delighted to visit the school, and emphasized on the importance of celebrating Armaan’s life by carrying on the legacy of sports.

The much awaited prize distribution ceremony was conducted by Mr Pramod Grover and Mr.Kapil Dev. Modern School, Barakhamba Road secured the third position while DPS Vasant Kunj bagged the second one. DPS R.K. Puram took home the winning trophy. The Best Player award was given to Parth Kothari of DPS R.K. Puram.

The cultural programme presented by the students included a yoga act, an energetic zumba performance and a tuneful song by the school choir.

The cultural programme was followed by an address by Dr. M.C. Mishra, who congratulated all the winners, and spoke about the importance of yoga. Mr Pramod Grover thanked Mr Kapil Dev for taking the time to visit the school, and Dr. Dogra for sponsoring the tournament. He further declared the tournament closed. The Vice Principal, Dr Renu Nayar delivered the vote of thanks and spoke to the students about the importance of fair play.

The programme came to an end with the national anthem.
