Delhi People Gathered to Save the Livelihood of more than 12 Lakhs Families of Pagri Shop-Keepers

  • Pagri Shop-Keepers demonstrated  a “Pagri March”
  • Dropped their  “Pagri” at the residence of Minister of Urban Development as a Symbolic Protest

New Delhi, 5th January-2015: A group of almost 1000 traders has launched a peaceful  “Pagri March” and dropped their  Pagri’s in the residence of Mr. Venkaiah Naidu, Honorable Minister of Urban Development as a Symbolic Protest . They appealed the Government to amend Delhi Tenant Law in support of these Pagri Shop-Keepers.

4-5 lakhs of small and medium scale Shop-Keepers, who were running their businesses since 70-80 years   has faced a livelihood problem recently. These are the Pagri Shop-Keepers who runs shops like Traders, Pan-wala, Mithai-wala, Grocery shops, Tea stalls etc in varies markets of Delhi /NCR. These traders claim that, an active lobby of Land Mafia is trying to vacate their shops with the help of some corrupt politicians.

Mr. Rambhakt Agarwal, spokesperson of Delhi Pagri Kirayadar Sanganthan” that initiated the Pagri March said,“The recent move to vacate the Pagri tenants is completely unconstitutional.  It’s an attempt to destroy livelihood of lakhs of people to benefit few people and these is happening in various Delhi Markets like Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar and Karol Bagh etc..   Decades back, when these people taken these shops, they paid the full money as per the value of that time and currently paying a minimum amount of Rent per month as per the mutual agreements. We have appealed to Honorable Chief Minister of Delhi, Honorable Prime Minister of India , Honorable Minister of Urban Development to amend the Law and save these small traders from the deep problem”.

During the protest move, President of Delhi Pagri Kirayadar Sanganthan, Mr. Ravi Kumar Garg said , “We have demanded a Balanced Tenant Law  in the lines of other states like Maharastra , Gujrat and Andhra Pradesh where interests of both Land owner and Tenant has reserved uniformly.   Delhi should not have the SAMRI PROCESS where the case of Pagri Tenants rejects. They get the opportunity to appeal in the Court of law. The Land owners should furnish the relevant documents instead of vacating forcefully using the tactics like repairing of stairs, terrace or creating parking slot etc.   And there should be a research on what is more important – that claim of Pagri tenant or land owner.  With such way land owner can vacate only one shop instead of vacating all shops along”.
