AAP statement on Munirka rape

The rape of a minor girl from Manipur in the Munirka area of the city raises very serious questions on the safety of women in the national capital and the competence of Delhi Police in tackling in the national capital.

Such condemnable incidents are leading to a growing outrage among the people who are agitated over the failure of law enforcement agencies in their duty to provide a safe environment for women to move freely and without fear in the city.

This shameful incident of rape again brings back the basic question – that are the people and government of Delhi helpless in dealing with issues of women safety since the central government which enjoys control over Delhi Police continues to ignore such a serious issue ?

The Aam Aadmi Party has consistently maintained that accountability of concerned police officials will have to be fixed so that such incidents are not repeated in future, but strangely the union home ministry and Delhi Police top brass have been resisting this demand of the AAP government purely on flimsy grounds.

Is it not justified to seek the suspension of the SHO of the concerned police station in whose jurisdiction such shameful crimes take place ?

Since the Parliament session is currently going on, the AAP would like to ask the Congress and BJP, both of whom have adequate numbers to get any bill passed in both Houses, why don’t these parties get the bill for providing statehood to Delhi, which is pending in Parliament since a decade passed ?

Both, the Congress and the BJP must answer the question that why are they silent on their election promise of providing full statehood to Delhi, which will make the Police accountable for its actions to the people?

Since the Congress is ruling at the Centre it is bound to defend the inefficiency, incompetence and unprofessional style of functioning of Delhi Police which is under the direct control of its home ministry. The AAP would like to know the BJP’s stand on the issue – does it believe the Police should be made accountable or like the Congress  it also wants to keep it under political control ?

Mere statements for political point scoring will not help the people of this city, what is required is a strong resolve to make the city safe and that would only be possible if the Delhi Police which has the responsibility to maintain law and order, is made accountable for its actions.

Giving TV bytes to condemn such incidents is only a disservice to the people of the national capital, whose patience is already running out due to the increasing shameful incidents.
