Noida: A car thief was arrested on Friday night in Sorkha village two hours after he and his partners mugged a person and made off with his car. A hunt is on for his four accomplices who had fled in another car. The accused has been identified as Rinku Yadav, a resident of Ghaziabad, who is wanted in several criminal cases.

Vijen Harit, a resident of Sector 47, filed a complaint with the Sector 49 police station on Friday in which he claimed he was robbed of his EcoSport car and money by five people when he stopped by at an eatery while returning home from work, said Arvind Yadav, Circle Officer, Noida City III. “Five criminals were already present at the eatery. They took his wallet with Rs 5,000 cash and car at gunpoint and fled after firing in the air,” he said.

A police team spotted an EcoSport and a Hyundai Santro coming towards them near Sorkha village. When police signalled the cars to stop, some people in the Santro fired at them and sped away, but the team managed to nab the man at the EcoSport wheel. The driver, on being surrounded by police, tried to escape but was caught after a brief chase and was later identified as Rinku. His four accomplices Monu, Mangal, Vikal and Rohit escaped in Santro.
During interrogation, Rinku confessed to having robbed Vijen Harit and also told police that he and his partners were to commit some more crimes that night. A country made revolver and two live cartridges were recovered from his possession.
“An FIR has been registered against all accused. We are trying to arrest the absconding criminals,” Arvind Yadav said.
