NEW DELHI, Sept. 3—Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Shri Ajay Maken announced here today that the Congress workers and leaders will observe a one-hour “maun vrath” on Monday, 5th September, 2016 from 9 a.m to 10 a.m at the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, to protest against the disparaging remarks made by  Aam Aadmi Party leader Ashutosh against Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Ministers Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru and Shri Atal Behari Vajpayee. He said  the “maun vrath” was to pray to give “sadh buddhi” to Arvind Kejriwal and Ashutosh. This decision was taken after a meeting of senior leaders and District Congress Committee presidents held under the leadership of Shri Ajay Maken at the DPCC office, Rajiv Bhawan, here today.

Prominent leaders who attended the meeting, besides Shri Ajay Maken, were former DPCC presidents Shri Prem Singh, Shri Subhash Chopra and Shri Arvinder Singh Lovely, ex-MPs Shri Sajjan Kumar and Shri Mahabal Mishra, former Delhi Ministers Dr Narendra Nath, Shri Haroon Yusuf, Shri Rajkumar Chauhan, Ex-MLAs Shri Naseeb Singh, Shri Hassan Ahmed, Shri Prahlad Singh Sahni, Shri Devendra Yadav, leaders of the Opposition in the MCD Shri Mukesh Goel and Smt. Varyam Kaur and chief spokesperson Smt. Sharmistha Mukherjee.

Later, addressing a press conference, Shri Ajay Maken said the Congress party strongly condemns the comments made by Ahutosh on Gandhi Ji, Nehru Ji and Shri Vajpayee Ji, and the “maun vrath” was to pray that good sense (“sadh buddhi”) prevails on Kejriwal and Ashutosh.  He said the Congress party will also gherao the Delhi Assembly when it holds a one-day session on 9th September at 1 p.m as the Kejriwal government has broken the set precedent to hold the one-day session as the date of the session was announced before finalizing the agenda for the session.

Shri Ajay Maken said Gandhi Ji has been the inspiration of the Congress party, and Congress follows the path charted out by Gandhi Ji, and the party would not tolerate any disparaging remarks on Gandhi. He said Gandhiji  was not only the leader of the Congress party, but also the whole country who taught the value of truth and non-violence to the whole world.

Shri Maken said  the gherao of the Delhi Assembly on 9th September was to highlight the failures of the Kejriwal Government during the past one and a half years as Delhi has suffered on various counts, including stalled development works, price rise, unemployment, corruption, the failure to control chikungunya, dengue, worsening law and order situation and water-logging due to lack of desilting of the drains.

Shri Maken said Delhi witnessed unprecedented water-logging during the recent rains as  out of the total number of 1005 PWD roads, under the control of the Delhi Government, desilting was completed only on 311 roads, which was merely 30.95 per cent, as on 5th July, 2016. He said the norm was that the desilting exercise should have been completed by 15th May.
