Supreme Court has directed the Centre to include Urdu as a language for 2018-19 session of NEET exam. The NEET UG exam is being held in 10 languages including Oriya and Kannada. The solicitor general has earlier told the Supreme Court that a students’ body seeking NEET examination in Urdu language has accused the Centre of being communal. Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar made the submission while referring to the affidavit filed by Students Islamic Organization of India (SIO) through its national secretary Thouseef Ahamad according to the earlier reports.

The Central government had earlier told the Supreme Court that it was open to the idea of conducting NEET in Urdu language from next session since the application process for this year had already ended. It had also said that no state had approached it with request for holding NEET in Urdu when a meeting was held on November 16, 2016 with state ministers. The responsibility of the CBSE is limited to the conduct of the entrance examination, declaration of result and providing All India Rank to the Directorate General Health Services, Government of India for the conduct of counselling for 15% All India Quota Seats and for supplying the result to state/other Counselling Authorities.
