Centre wants Aadhaar-like unique identification numbers for cows

New Delhi: Going one step further to ensure there is no smuggling and slaughter of cows, the Centre has suggested that even cows should have Aadhaar-like unique identification numbers.

“Each cow and its progeny across India should get a Unique Identification Number for tracking,” the Centre told the Supreme Court on Monday in its report on cow protection.

The Centre told the apex court that a Committee headed by the Joint Secretary of the Home Ministry has been formed which has given out certain recommendations.

“Responsibility of safety and care of abandoned animals is mainly of the State government,” the Centre’s report stated.

The Centre added that each district should have a shelter home with a capacity of keeping at least 500 abandoned animals.

Among other recommendations, the Centre has recommended special care for cattle beyond the age of milking and has also stressed on launching a scheme aimed at improving the condition of the distressed farmers.

The crackdown on cow slaughter has resulted in many self-styled ‘gau rakshaks’ in the country to act against those allegedly involved in the act.

Eleven people have been arrested for thrashing members of a nomadic family, including a 9-year-old girl, in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district for allegedly illegally transporting cattle.

Three men were attacked by a mob of 15 men, allegedly belonging to an animal rights group in South Delhi’s Kalkaji area on Saturday night.
