–          More than 100 Dentists from Ludhiana participated in the day long programme

Ludhiana, 4th May, 2017: Experts from Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana, in association with Indian Dental Association (IDA) organised a day long Continued Medical Education (CME) programme for city dentists today. The talk dwelled on the health implication of Viral Hepatitis B & C along with preventive techniques and medico legal issues in dentistry. Dr Nitin Shanker Behl, Senior Consutant & Head, Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Dr Pradeep Sharma, Director, DNB programme at Fortis Hospital, Ludhiana spoke at the CME.

The talk highlighted the topic of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) & C virus (HCV) & its implications on the general health of population, along with specific focus on dentistry. It is major cause of liver cirrhosis and liver carcinoma. HBV infection from treating an ill patient can be prevented by stringent observance to standard microbiological practices and techniques. Routine use of appropriate barrier precautions by doctors to prevent skin and mucous membrane exposure in handling blood and other body fluids helps contain the chances of contracting the infection. Many post-exposure protocols that can be undertaken to minimize the risk of infection.

In this regard, Dr Nitin Shanker Behl said, “HBV and HCV are very critical viral infection that is posing a grave threat to humans today. To treat a patient with either of these infections can be difficult and challenging. It is important that all necessary preventive measures are strictly followed by to minimise the chance of any infection while treating the patient.”

Medico Legal aspect in dental cases were also discussed at length in this CME. The experts explained various aspects of medico legal cases that are largely unknown to the dentistry community. Simple explanation of various laws & legal issues affecting dentists were illustrated and discussed.

While making a point, Dr Pradeep Sharma said, “The legal process may often be lethargic and difficult to navigate. However, it is important that dentists’ follows basic guidelines are followed in letter & spirit. Expert advice from a competent authority should be sought urgently if there is a need.”

Dr Rajiv Bali, Principal, Dental College was the chief guest of the event. Under the able guidance of Dr Vandana Chhabra, President, Ludhiana branch of IDA, the event was hailed by members of IDA as a success. The incisive and informative talks were appreciated. Dr. Rajiv Bali thanked all the members present and gave award of honour to both the speakers.
