Straight Talk: Need social and political movement to empower women in India, says speakers

New Delhi: To highlight the apathy and indifference of Indian women in our society All India Professionals’ Congress (AIPC) held ‘Straight Talk, Women First’ programme in Delhi.

 

 

The programme was conducted on the wake of International Women’s Day.

 

Score of speakers such as Congress MP, Shashi Tharoor, President of All India Mahila Congress, Sushmita Dev, former Chief Minister of Delhi, Sheila Dixit, Former union minister, Ajay Maken and others participated in the event.

 

 

‘Women First’ titled Straight Talk discussed the grave challenges faced by women from different walk of lives.  In the first edition, the event was focused on women, health, safety, sanitation, employability, gender equality and so on.

Chairman of the AIPC Shashi Tharoor said that he is a feminist by heart just because of his family. “I always tried to raise women issue in the Parliament I don’t know I succeeded or not but I always tried to do.”

While addressing the event, former Delhi CM Sheila Dixit said that we need social and political movement in the society to empower women in India. “When I was in government I had decided to pitch an idea where male member of the family will work for day while women will take rest. We should expend this idea.”

Later, former Union Minister Ajay Maken said Congress has done a lot to empower women be it in the party or society but a lot more work has to be done. “We have decided to pass women reservation bill in the parliament if Congress comes to power.”
