New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today thanked actor Aamir Khan for supporting the ‘single-use plastic’ movement. He took to his twitter handle and wrote a thank you note to the actor.
“Thank you @aamir_khan for the valuable support to the movement to eliminate usage of single use plastic. Your encouraging words will inspire others to strengthen the movement as well,” the Prime Minister tweeted on Wednesday.
In his recent address to the nation on the radio show, ‘Mann ki baat’, the PM had asked people to initiate a movement against the usage of plastic from October, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. This was a follow up to his appeal of a plastic-free India made during his Independence Day address earlier this month.
After his appeal to the nation for a mass movement curb the use of single-use plastic, Aamir Khan who often come forward to speak on environment issues, tweeted in PM’s support.
He wrote, “The initiative by the Hon’ble PM @narendramodi to curb ‘single use plastic’ is an effort all of us should strongly support. It’s up to each of us to make sure we stop using ‘single use plastic’.”
The amount of plastic waste generated in India is quite high and is a matter of great concern. According to a statement that was issued by former Human resource Development minister Prakash Javadekar, 15000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated on daily basis, 9,000 tonnes are collected and recycled, but 6,000 tonnes of plastic waste still remain littered all over the streets.
This littered plastic makes its way into rivers, oceans and ground soil, polluting the environment, hampering regeneration of plants, blocking drains and canals and upsetting the ecosystems.
Almost 62.7% of waste items include plastic wrappers of candies, chewing gums, chips and other such products. According to the experts, these wrappers, which are generally categorised as multi-layered plastic are non-bio-degradable and cannot be recycled.
