DELHI CONGRESS LEADERS INFORM THE LT. GOVERNOR ABOUT THE PARTY’S CHAKKA-JAM AGITATION
A high-level delegation of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC), under the leadership of its president Shri Arvinder Singh, MLA today met Lt. Governor of Delhi Dr Najeeb Jung on the pressing problems of power and water, and the sealing of household industries and readymade garment units by the Delhi Municipal Corporations.
DPCC chief spokesperson and senior leader Shri Mukesh Sharma said the delegation submitted a detailed memorandum to the Lt. Governor. The delegation, besides Shri Mukesh Sharma, included ex-MP Shri Ramesh Kumar, former Minister Shri Mangat Ram Singhal, former MLA Kanwar Karan Singh, Mehndi Majid, Prabjit Singh Jitti, Readymade Garment Units’ Association office-bearers and office-bearers of the Residents’ Welfare Associations.
The memorandum submitted by Shri Arvinder Singh to the Lt. Governor said that due to the shortage of drinking water, the people of Delhi were not only facing severe problems, but the situation was getting out of control. The memorandum also pointed out that unscheduled power cuts, ranging from 10 to 12 hours, were being imposed in Delhi, particularly in unauthorized colonies, villages, JJ clusters and resettlement colonies. There were also areas in Delhi where drinking water was not at all available, nor they are being provided with water tanker supplies. The Pradesh Congress requested the Lt Governor to identify such areas and make water supply to such areas through water tankers.
The Pradesh Congress also informed the Lt Governor that there were areas in Delhi where people have been forced to drink dirty or underground water, threatening the outbreak of diseases. The Congress party also registered its protest at the long power cuts, particularly in West and South Delhi areas.
Shri Arvinder Singh also requested the Lt. Governor to put an immediate stop to the sealing drive undertaken by the BJP-ruled MCDs on household industrial and readymade garment units. He said the MCD officials were deliberately not renewing the licences of these units. Quoting the example of the Gandhi Nagar Assembly constituency, he said the MCD officials were taking bribes with both hands from the owners of these industrial units.
Shri Mukesh Sharma clearly told the Lt. Governor about the Pradesh Congress’ decision that if the power and water condition did not improve in Delhi, the Congress Party, with the support of the people, will be forced to strengthen its chakka-jam agitation. He said during the
Congress rule in Delhi, the Government had provide 24-hour power supply, but now even the law and order situation is being threatened on power and water shortage issue, for which the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party should be held squarely responsible. He said despite getting more than the required quantity of electricity in Delhi, the people were facing great difficulty, though 387 megawatt power was surplus to meet the requirements of Delhi.
