Delhi power crisis raises doubts on Centre’s intention
The consistent failure of the central government and the Delhi administration in checking the endless power cuts across the national capital raise serious doubts on their intention and clearly indicates towards a multiple failure of an insensitive regime.
It appears that the union power ministry and the city administration are taking advantage of the absence of an elected government in Delhi to take effective steps for ending the miseries of the people.
It is shocking that the Delhi administration which is currently being directly controlled by the BJP-led Narendra Modi central government, is resorting to stop gap desperate measures like rationing of electricity, instead of addressing the real issue of ensuring adequate electricity supply across the city.
Equally shocking is the silence of the union power minister and all the seven newly elected MPs of Delhi. The Aam Aadmi Party demands that the central government should take immediate steps to ensure that the electricity demand during peak summer months should be provided to Delhi and all other outstanding issues can be addressed later.
The decision like stopping electricity supply to shopping malls after 10 PM are typical examples of poor planning which may lead to a serious crisis in the long run. The administration is not expected to impose curbs on lives of people particularly during the vacation months, to hide its own failures.
It is beyond any reasonable understanding as to why those running the city’s administration have failed to solve the power crisis situation since more than a week now. Asking people and government servants to observe austerity is a sign of a desperate administration trying to wriggle out of a tight spot without addressing the real issue.
The AAP appeals to the central government and the city administration that they should not test the patience of the people in this scorching summer and spontaneous protests by people in some parts of the city are a sign of the growing discontentment against the lack of electricity and water.
The current sorry state of affairs is a result of the wrong priorities of the city administration which has so far miserably failed in adopting a tough approach in dealing with the private power distribution companies (discoms).
It is the duty of the newly elected central government and the newly elected MPs to put an end to the miseries of the people and the AAP is of the clear view that the administration should take help of all political parties in resolving the power crisis in the national capital.
The new government should be fair in its dealing with the people of the national capital and the AAP appeals to it to avoid a confrontationist approach.
