First convict in Delhi riots sentenced to five years jail for putting a house ablaze

New Delhi, January 20: Dinesh Yadav, the first person convicted in connection with the northeast Delhi riots of February 2020 has been sentenced to five years jail by a Delhi court on Thursday.
On December 7, 2021, Yadav was convicted for being part of an unlawful assembly that set a house on fire during the violence in northeast Delhi in February 2020.
The prosecution held that Yadav was an “active member of the riotous mob” and participated in vandalizing and putting on fire the house of a 73-year-old woman, Manori on the night of February 25, 2020.
Additional sessions judge Virender Bhatt had held him accountable for being part of a riotous mob that set the said house ablaze.
A detailed order on the sentencing is yet awaited; however, it was reported that Yadav has also been directed to pay a fine of ₹12,000.
On June 8, 2020, 25-year-old Dinesh Yadav was apprehended in connection with the Delhi riots case, but charges were framed against him by the court on August 3, 2021, to which he pleaded not guilty and claimed trial. He was convicted later in 2021, on December 6.
Communal clashes broke out in the northeastern parts of Delhi in February 2020 after tension between supporters of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and those protesting against it.
The communal clashes in February 2020 left at least 53 people dead and over 700 injured.
