New Delhi, 5 July 2022: With the NCR Planning Board’s approval of Haryana’s proposal to completely exclude five districts and take out three tehsils districts from the administrative boundary of the region on Tuesday, the area of the National Capital Region (NCR) could shrink by nearly 24 percent.

Haryana’s proposal includes excluding five districts of Karnal, Mahendragarh, Charkhi-Dadri, Jind, and Bhiwani completely and getting rid of three tehsils of Panipat and Rohtak districts from its administrative boundary.

However, the other three states, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and NCT of Delhi have not made a similar request. Therefore, with no opposition to Haryana’s suggestion, the way is thus opened for Haryana’s suggestion to be accepted.

According to the data, the suggested area of Haryana in the NCR was 13,413 sq km in the Regional Plan 2021, the real extent rose to 25,327 sq km as more districts were added by 2018. Five additional districts — Mahendragarh, Bhiwani, Charkhi-Dadri, Karnal, and Jind — were included in the NCR during this time. The Bharatpur district of Rajasthan as well as Muzaffarnagar and Shamli, two districts in Uttar Pradesh, were included in the region.

Sources claimed that the Board would discuss two sets of proposed Regional Plan 2041 on Tuesday for the first time. One design will be based on the 55,144 sq km of the NCR that currently exists, while the other will be based on the area that is being proposed to be reduced (42,083 sq km). The Board will approve either of them, they claimed.

Officials acknowledged that there have been calls for the inclusion of additional districts in the NCR, but these calls had more to do with “political” considerations than with the region’s sound planning and growth.
