Delhi, August 19th, 2022: National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, currently on an unannounced visit to Russia, discussed a range of issues related to bilateral security cooperation with his Russian counterpart Nikolai Patrushev.

This was the first in-person meeting between Doval and Patrushev since the start of the Ukraine conflict in February.
Doval’s visit comes against the backdrop of India’s decision to go ahead with purchases of discounted Russian commodities, primarily crude oil, despite opposition from Western countries.

The Russian embassy, in a statement, said the talks included cooperation in the area of security, as well as topical problems in the region.
A discussion on trade and economic ties between the countries including the peaceful use of outer space was reported as well.

Ajit Doval had also conveyed India’s concerns over Russia’s ‘China tilt’ during his visit to Moscow. Doval met the newly appointed Russian Deputy Prime Minister-in-charge of weapon industries Denis Manturov after meeting his Russian counterpart.
He made it clear that India only takes decisions based on its self-interests and national security concerns and is not bound to any camp.

This visit comes as India continues to engage with Russia on a number of issues including India’s energy security amid the Ukraine conflict.
