Justice U.U. Lalit shares his priorities as CJI, promises year-round constitution bench

Delhi, August 27th, 2022: Newly sworn-in Chief Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit shared a list of priorities that he intends to address as the 49th CJI of India.

Lalit has succeeded N.V. Ramana and will have a tenure of 73 days before retiring on November 8th, 2022.

Among the three key areas of his focus, Justice Lalit said the top priority would be to make listing simple, clear, and transparent as possible. He also promised to ensure a clear-cut regime where any urgent matters can freely be mentioned before respective courts.

Speaking at the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) farewell event for outgoing CJI NV Ramana, the CJI-designate said his third area of focus would be listing of matters before the Constitution benches and matters which are specially referred to benches of three judges.

He has assured that at least one Constitution Bench would be present at the Supreme Court on all days. “We will strive hard to at least have one Constitutional Bench functioning throughout the year”, Lalit said.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court notified that 25 five-judge Constitution bench matters that have been pending for quite some time will be heard and will be listed from August 29.

Further, he said that one of the key roles of Supreme Court would be to lay down law with clarity and consistency.

For Justice Lalit, August 29 will be the first working day as the chief justice in the top court after he was sworn in as the CJI at the Rashtrapati Bhavan by President of India, Droupadi Murmu.
