Delhi, Sept 29th, 2022: The Central government on Wednesday stated that the free ration scheme in the country will be extended for the next three months.
Announcing the government’s decision, Union Minister Anurag Thakur said, “The tenure of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM-GKAY) is being extended till December 2022. In the next three months, around ₹ 44,000 crores will be spent under this scheme”.
The free ration scheme had originally begun in the Covid-19 period wherein 5 kg of free food grains were provided per person per month among the poor.
The decision to extend the free ration scheme, which was scheduled to end on September 30, has been taken in view of the forthcoming festive season and to win the support of people in the upcoming elections.
“Extension of the free ration scheme will benefit crores of people and help them during the festive season”, said Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Almost 80 crore poor people in India benefit from the government’s free ration scheme.
