Russia, Nov 10, 2022: On Wednesday, Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu has directed the Russian troops to withdraw from the west bank of Dnipro river which is located in close proximity to the Ukrainian city of Kherson.
This order can serve as a major setback for Moscow as well as a key turning point in the Russia-Ukraine war.
In response to the statement released on Wednesday, Ukraine reacted with caution saying that some Russian forces were still in Kherson with additional Russian manpower being sent to the region.
“Until the Ukrainian flag is flying over Kherson, it makes no sense to talk about a Russian withdrawal,” Mykhailo Podolyak, a senior adviser to Ukrainian President Zelenskiy, said in a statement.
A strategic location, Kherson city controls both the only land route to the Crimea peninsula which was annexed by Russia in 2014, and the mouth of the Dnipro river which bisects Ukraine.
Russian-installed officials have been evacuating tens of thousands of civilians in recent weeks.
