New Delhi (India), 22nd February 2023: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday announced that the Tata group had officially become the Title Sponsor for Women’s Premier League (WPL). The announcement was made by Jay Shah son of Home Minister Amit Shah who is currently serving as the BCCI Secretary.
Shah announced on his Twitter handle and stated that with the support of the Tata group, WPL and Women’s cricket will reach new levels. The BCCI received a bid of nearly ₹4,700 Crore which is more than the bid on the very first IPL tournament. A five-year contract has been signed between the BCCI and Tata Group. Last year Tata group also replaced the title sponsor Vivo for the Indian Premier League (IPL).
In the auction that was held The Adani Group, Capri Global as well as the owners of IPL teams Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals had bought five WPL teams in the auction for the debut of the tournament.
Organising such tournaments will bring in the much-needed audience and recognition for women’s cricket. This will also decrease the extreme pay disparity between male and female players which had been a disappointment for the female Indian cricket players.
