New Delhi (India), March 25, 2023: In a tumultuous session on Friday (March 24, 2023), the Lok Sabha passed the Finance Bill 2023 without any debate amidst disruptions by opposition members. The Bill gives effect to tax proposals and has been passed with several official amendments, including the addition of 20 more sections.
However, the House was in disarray as several opposition members, raising slogans and holding placards, demanded a probe by a Joint Parliamentary Committee into the allegations against the Adani group of companies. These allegations followed a report by a US-based short seller.
Despite the disruptions, the Finance Bill was passed, and the chair adjourned the proceedings of the House till Monday as the sloganeering continued. It is noteworthy that the Budget was passed without any discussion on Thursday.
The developments in the Lok Sabha regarding the Finance Bill 2023 have created a stir in political circles, particularly the opposition’s demand for a JPC probe into the allegations against the Adani group of companies. It remains to be seen how the situation unfolds in the coming days.
