New Delhi (India), April 10, 2023: Prohibitory orders have been imposed and riot control police deployed in Jharkhand’s Jamshedpur after two groups clashed over the alleged desecration of a Ram Navami flag.
The situation turned violent when mobs threw stones at each other and set two shops and an autorickshaw on fire in Shastrinagar. The police had to fire tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. However, the situation is under control now, according to city police chief Prabhat Kumar.
Deputy Commissioner, East Singhbhum, Vijaya Jadhav said that some people have been detained and efforts are being made to establish communication with peace committees to restore normalcy.
Jadhav also urged people not to believe in rumors and to cooperate with the police to maintain law and order. The area has been tense since Saturday, when members of a local organization found a Ram Navami flag desecrated, leading to protests demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits.
The police are taking strict measures to restore peace and have deployed a company of Rapid Action Force personnel and other anti-riot resources. Meanwhile, riot police conducted a flag march in the area this morning. Top police officers are also camping in the area to monitor the situation.
